Home security systems have undergone numerous evolutions, especially during the last decade. As we head into 2023, new and exciting developments are on the horizon for home safety.
Discover which home security technology and features we expect to debut during the coming year.
What to expect from home security systems in 2023
Advancements in smart home security
Smart home automation has been the most exciting security development for several years. We expect this trend to continue in 2023, bringing customers several new capabilities.
Currently, smart home devices are an option for most, but not all home security systems. We expect that to change in the near future. Soon, every security provider will build smart features into their systems to give consumers stronger security and increased convenience.
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance, we expect several capabilities to become standard across the industry. Take Vivint’s Smart Sentry feature, for example. Vivint’s security cameras automatically light up and tell lurkers that they’re being recorded when the motion sensor is triggered. We expect similar features to come from other security providers as well.
Other upcoming features may include automatic license plate recognition. Rather than trying to zoom in on your security footage to read the plate, cameras may automatically recognize and record the plate number.
Additionally, we think security providers will continue to improve third-party integrations. As smart devices replace more and more of our household items, home security systems will need to improve their ability to seamlessly connect with a variety of products.
Contactless security
As technology advances, home security systems are finding new ways to tighten security – both for your home and for its software. Contactless technology is one major step in the right direction.
Already, some smart door locks use biometric technology, such as fingerprint scans and facial recognition software, to authorize users. Iris scans are another secure way to vet visitors. Homes with smart home ecosystems can also use voice commands to control numerous devices.
Smart security devices that use contactless technology are harder to hack and break into. Rather than relying on a code that can be stolen or guessed, they only accept biometric data that can’t be faked.
Of course, these devices are limited by internet and power connections. During a power outage, they have to rely on more traditional options, like a key, to operate.
Convenience is one of the most important benefits offered by home security systems today. Smart devices that offer contactless options will continue to grow in popularity during 2023.
DIY luxury security systems
For many decades, you could only get a wired home security system. Though we don’t rely on this technology anymore, most luxury home security systems, such as Vivint and ADT, still require professional installation.
Since younger generations prefer more options and control over their purchases, not to mention fewer fees, DIY home security systems are becoming more popular.
Do-it-yourself security systems are generally known to have fewer features than their more expensive counterparts. To keep costs low, these security providers use devices with less-impressive technology.
With many DIY systems, however, customers have the option to choose higher-end products. Rather than forcing consumers to pay high prices for all of their equipment, they can choose which products are worth the additional expense. This model gives customers more control while allowing them to stick to their budgets.
In 2023, we predict that more home security providers will follow this model. These companies will develop more affordable versions of their luxury systems, giving customers the ability to prioritize certain features, devices, and services.
Along with producing cheaper versions of their products, these security providers will push DIY installation with the option to pay extra for professional set-up. Similarly, you may see more systems offer both professional monitoring and self-monitoring.
Advancements in sensor technology
Sensors are the basis for any home security system. They’ve evolved from wired to wireless devices, but we haven’t seen many more advancements in door/window sensors. In the coming years, we can expect to see stronger tamper-proof features for these devices.
Additionally, other security sensors will advance in the near future. By integrating facial recognition in motion sensors, for instance, security providers can decrease the number of false alarms. Some sensors may even be programmed with voice recognition. You can then use commands to disarm these sensors and prevent false alarms.
Smart emergency alarms will also continue to advance. More companies will offer smoke and CO detectors that can seamlessly and wirelessly integrate with the traditional alarms throughout the home. This technology will keep families safer and make systems more efficient.
Energy-efficient home security systems
Eco-friendly technology is currently a top priority. Consumers appreciate products that offer exceptional results while also minimizing their effect on the environment.
For home security systems, that means products that use energy more efficiently. You will see more options that are powered by alternative means of energy, such as solar panels. Solar-powered security cameras and outdoor lights are already available, for instance, but we will continue to see advancements in this area.
Energy efficiency will grow in other areas as well. Security providers will continue to develop products that require less energy. They will also build in additional ways to cut back on energy waste.
More video
Security cameras are an essential part of any home security system. In addition to the indoor, outdoor, and doorbell cameras that are already available, we will see video become more prevalent in every system.
Brinks, for example, has built a camera into its control panel. It records a video of everyone who disarms the system for stronger security. You can also use it to video chat with users on the app.
Along with integrating more video surveillance in home security systems, we predict that professional monitoring with video support will become more affordable and accessible for all customers.
