What are smart locks?

Smart locks are deadbolts that connect to the internet, giving you remote control of the locks through a smart device or computer. These devices also integrate with other smart devices, such as a home security system.

Vivint smart door locks

If you choose the Premium Plus Package for your security system, a smart lock is included with your equipment. You can also add this device to any equipment package.

As with all Vivint smart devices, your lock will integrate seamlessly with your security system. You can see and control the lock through the Vivint app or the Smart Hub control panel. 

Even better, you can create custom conditional actions to automate locking and unlocking the door. Saving time, avoiding stress, and enjoying total confidence in your home’s security has never been easier.

Appearance and design

This model of smart lock is available in three colors. You can choose Polished Brass, Satin Nickel, or Venetian Bronze, finding the option that best complements your home’s design.

The Kwikset smart lock replaces your current lock, so it will be a similar size to what you have now. Along with the keyhole, it has five numbered buttons and a center button you will press to lock or unlock the door.

The smart lock runs on four AA batteries, so you will need to change them periodically. They typically last for about 6-12 months, depending on how much your locks are used, so it isn’t a significant inconvenience.

Installation

All Vivint plans currently include free professional installation. After you’ve ordered your security system, a technician will bring the equipment to your home to install.

It doesn’t take long to install the smart lock, but there are several pieces and wires involved. Even if you prefer to install it yourself, we recommend leaving it to the professionals. 

If you think you will want a smart lock, include it in your initial equipment package so it will be installed with the rest of your system. Remember, installation is free!

Vivint’s system does integrate with a few other smart locks, which we’ll get into later, so you do have the option of choosing another device that you can install and connect it to the Smart Hub yourself. Installing it correctly is the only way to make sure it will work with the rest of your system, however, so this may not be the best option.

Smart locks can be opened with a key like any other deadbolt, but their extra features give you additional options. 

You can also take advantage of the smart connections to gain helpful insights about your security. No matter where you are, your door’s locks will always be under your control.

Access codes

As mentioned, the Kwikset 888 SmartCode lock has numbered buttons that you can use to enter a unique access code. If you’re out on a run and don’t want to bring your keys, for example, or simply don’t want to dig them out, you can easily punch in your code to lock and unlock the door.

This type of lock allows you to create up to 30 unique codes. You can give a code to everyone who lives in your home and any other friends or family members that might need to access the house. 

With these codes, you will never have to be home to let visitors inside.

Giving these codes out to anyone that needs access may not always be the safest option. If you have carpet cleaners, dog walkers, or others who need to get in while you’re gone but aren’t trusted enough to have free reign, you can create temporary access codes.

Best of all, you can use these codes to track who is coming into your home and when they opened the door. Just open the app to see a list of the codes used and at what time they were entered.

If using a smart device has you worried about hackers, you won’t need to worry about your lock. Equipped with 128-bit encryption, this smart lock is well-protected against hacking. In fact, the odds that someone would even be able to guess a working passcode are 1 in 100,000. As long as you protect your access codes, you can rest assured that your home will stay secure.

Voice commands

Ever wished your door would open on command? Now it can! If you use a smart home assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant, you can integrate it with your Vivint security system. Once connected, you can then control your smart devices with voice commands, locks included.

When you’re at the door, simply tell your smart assistant to have Vivint unlock the door. You can also use this feature to lock up on your way out. You won’t ever have to juggle or set anything down to keep your door secure.

Smart home automation

Smart assistants aren’t the only devices you can connect with. Creating a network of smart devices that work seamlessly together is one of Vivint’s top priorities and best features. To get free professional installation, you’ll need to purchase your Kwikset 888 SmartCode lock through Vivint. If you don’t order it with the rest of your equipment, you still may be able to get it from your installer when they come to set your system up. Just ask them during the appointment.

But this isn’t the only smart lock, or even the only Kwikset product, that will work with your home security system.

Vivint’s equipment can integrate with smart devices that operate on Z-Wave protocol. If you already have a smart door lock that uses this technology or you want to add one later, you can likely connect it with your system.
